Scope & Content |
Letter to Samuel W. Pennypacker from Singleton Ashenfelter of Rock Island, IL on April 15, 1869. Singleton states that he has discovered where the quote, "Tis well to be off with the old love, Before you are on with the new" that he asked SWP to find for him. SWP did not give the search due time resulting in Singleton stating he should not have bothered him with the request. Singleton then states that he will address several statements that SWP made and that he should "...consider the circumstances of the case closely and endeavor to reflect upon and thoroughly digest the ideas which may be drawn from these words of yours." Singleton quotes several only to say that he does this because he "...had failed to commend your (SWP) verses." Singleton did not suppose that when invited to comment much stock would be placed on what he said. Singleton has been elected a vestryman of the Episcopal Church. He sent copies of the announcement to friends whose response was that he is a "hypocritiser professor of Christianity." Singleton takes offense to this because he takes a "...decided pleasure in the forms. I like it, and that expresses the whole thing." Miss Laura is an attendee but that is not the reason to participate. Singleton told Miss Laura on Valentines Day of his feelings for her. Her response, "Oh! Mr. Ashenfelter, do you realize what you are saying?" She then sat with her gaze to the floor and listened to all that Singleton had to say about his life. In short she could not take such a step for, "The step was a step for live, and she could not take it unless she felt sure that she did love." They parted with a handshake and Singleton calls on her every Thursday, see her at church and calls on her in the eve as well as other times. Singleton ends with mentioning that there has been an attempt at a revolution in Guayaquil and a number of his friends have been shot. |
