Scope & Content |
Letter to Samuel W. Pennypacker from Singleton Ashenfelter of Santa Fe, N.M. on April 19, 1871. Singleton states that he received the "Texas Pacific" Bills enclosed in Samuel's last letter. Singleton asks Samuel if he pretends to be a "...Phoenxivillian and not cherish the memory of 'old Davy'? "The feeling and conduct of the villagers are perhaps natural enough in view of all the circumstances. I think they are a d__d servile crowd, ... ever one of the worst book licks in the party, but then they have been educated to it, and if the employers and the citizens wish to fight for the glorious privilege of erecting a monument to the fallen..." He then goes on to speak about a Brother Jones, who he feels is a liar and a scoundrel; "...conduct towards women..." He closes his thoughts stating, "...altogether things are dismal - from a moral point of view." |
